Melissa Guzmán, DVM — Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Guzmán is the newest member of the Verde Veterinary Hospital team, joining us as an Associate Veterinarian in June 2016. She grew up in Austin, Texas, but now lives down the road in Prescott. Dr. Guzmán received a BA degree in Sociology from the University of Texas-Austin in 1991. She then earned a Master's degree in Sociology/Counseling from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1993. After graduation, she worked the next 3 years in College Recreation and Fitness, then as a backcountry guide in training before she took a fall, so had to hang-up the backpack for a while. She went to Alaska to recover from her injuries, and decided to stay on for the adventure for another 5 years. While she was there, she worked in social services for the Anchorage School District for a year, and then started a highly competitive, challenging career as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative that took her to all parts of Alaska. She spent one last year in the field, covering the state of New Mexico before leaving her job and going back to school full-time to pursue veterinary school prerequisites, and ultimately a veterinary degree from Colorado State University, graduating in 2008.

Previously, Dr. Guzmán practiced at veterinary clinics in New Mexico and North Carolina, where she did a little horse work for several years, and then focused in on cats, dogs, and small exotic mammals. She was also a contract veterinarian at a wolf rescue/sanctuary in Silver City, NM. While in Arizona, she has expanded her reach beyond general practice by fulfilling a need at low cost vaccine clinics, and most recently has worked primarily as an urgent care/emergency veterinarian for almost 2 years. Dr. Guzman is excited to come back to spending the majority of her time in the practice of preventative medicine as one of your general practice veterinarians.

In her free time, Dr. Guzmán is working to complete a Master of Public Health degree. Her true love is hiking on remote trails with her dogs and husband, but any indoor/outdoor activity that keeps her moving is fine with her! Her hobbies include cooking, eating, wine pairings, and reading. She is always seeking out interesting local music, arts and culture, and also loves to travel internationally to meet and learn about amazing people, taste strange new foods, and see beautiful places. Dr. Guzmán shares her life with her similarly active husband, Woody, and her three “kids,” Mariposa, a very sweet, high-energy, 6 year old terrier mix, Zagal, a loving, but protective, 2 year old Shiba Inu mix, and Pingo, a 5 year old ferret that lives to get into trouble, and play with his two doggy siblings.
